Totally agree with you Bill.
My Asian friend works in Applebee's in Buffalo. He's a part-time waiter. And the funny thing is that, he prefers not to serve Asian guests because most of time, they don't leave proper tip. That makes him really upset, although he offers nice service…
So~ For people who's reading this message… Please leave proper tip for your waiter or waitress (especially Applebee's on Maple road, Buffalo NY) and maybe my friend won't be sad next time…
Peiyun,
That's an interesting story! What a great study into how culuturally we are trained one way, yet in a different land we need to adjust. It goes both ways, westerners certainly make mistakes in Asia--and as I see in your example, it happens all around the globe. It's a manageable thing, and people can modify their behavior. I'm just upset that restaurants here charge the 10% service fee and keep it for themselves, at don't give it to the waiters and waitresses--it's really quite an injustice. And, unfortunatley, it is a "de-motivator" for the staff. Take care Peiyun!

My english is so bad!!!!! (Actually, everyone can see what happens when you rush----culturally is mis-spelled, and "at" should be "and" in the sentence "at don't give it to the waiters . . . "
See what happens if you're careless like Bad Teacher Bill!
Hello,Bill
Actually,I've been haunted by a question for a long period of time, which is , when we are treated rudely or the service they offer simply doesn't meet our expectations,do we still need to give tip?
I have this question because I've come into an awlful waiter in Paris and eventually my friend and I decided to leace nothing.(I feel kind of quilty now, though.I have to say that that's the only time that I didn't leave tip in Europe!)I think it's not the problem about being cheap or not,but about the cultural differences.
Asian pepole were not taught this manner before, so that's why we don't have this kind oh habit. However,I do agree that those good waiters and waitress deserve to be paid and that we follow the different "costoms" in different countries.
Ps.I've heard one of the reasons why tip exist is that the salary of those waiters and waitress are a bit discouraging,so tips are the way they can, more or less, increase their payment. Is that right?(That's just what I've heard before..)
Sorry for the long comment and the grammar mistakes that might exist.
Take care and have a nice day!
typing mistake of "Anonymous"
Line 7 in the first paragraph:

To Anonymous, regarding the May 18 and 19 comments (sorry for such a late reply). You were okay to not leave a tip if you received service that was so bad. It's a rare situation, but that's okay for you not to leave a tip--if it was an awful experience.
It is true, especially in America, that hourly wages are low for waiters and waitresses--usually near $2.50 an hour--so they do rely on tips to increase their income.
Secondly, don't worry about your mis-spelling or grammar mistakes---I make them all the time!
Take care!
Bill
I'm one of your listeners in Advanced.
To wish you happy birthday, Bill.

Thanks Kelvin! And thanks for listening to the program! Gia-you!
